How likely is it that a major construction project will make it to completion without sustaining a significant property loss? Statistics provide cause for concern. And, if a project is delayed considerably by a significant property loss, just think of the consequences.
Most of the almost 1,200 construction incidents reported to FM Global in the last 10 years could have been avoided if just a little bit of thought had been put into anticipating what might go wrong, then taking the extra step to prevent it. We can point out just how many possible problems can and did occur, and the relatively simple prevention steps that can be taken to avoid each problem.
Construction-project management cannot afford to ignore the possibility of property loss. There is sufficient and compelling evidence to persuade anyone on site to be concerned—and with a little education, everyone on site should be prepared to team up to prevent or minimize problems.

Construction sites are particularly vulnerable to property loss.
Security is weak due to loose boundaries. Protection usually is incomplete. And, often there are adverse weather conditions. All of these situations warrant a careful analysis and focused attention.

All property losses have causes, most of which can be managed. And, if the cause cannot be managed, usually the effect can. Here are some examples:
1.A fire will not occur unless an ignition source is paired with a combustible in an atmosphere of sufficient oxygen. Ignition sources can be managed and kept away from combustibles. And, extinguishing equipment can be provided in the event they do meet. Ordinarily, the risk of fire is lowered once sprinklers are installed with an adequate water supply—but that usually isn’t the case during construction.
2.Wind is predictable. Equipment and material blow over because they are not anchored properly.
3.Low points fill up with water because they are not dammed sufficiently or there is insufficient pumping capacity available to control the flow.
4.Leakage occurs because piping isn’t of appropriate size or type, isn’t joined properly to contain the pressure, or isn’t protected properly against freeze-up or impact damage.
5.Impact occurs because operators lack training and/or concentration. Or, perhaps, sensitive equipment is not protected with barriers as it should be.
6.Burglary and theft occur because security is weak and valuable tools, equipment and material are not kept in a safe place.

What You Can Do at Your Construction Site
1.Manage ignition sources by providing appropriate protection and minimizing combustibles.
2.Provide adequate security and lighting.
3.Watch weather forecasts and act accordingly.
4.Keep as much protection in place as possible.
5.Organize an emergency response to all possible threats.
6.Train employees to watch for and report conditions that could lead to property loss.
7.Educate contractors about your expectations while working on site and ensure they accept
the liability for any errors they commit.
